HPQ & EPQ
We cultivate independent thinking and research excellence through the HPQ and EPQ, where curiosity and creativity thrive.
HPQ & EPQ at City
The Higher Project Qualification (HPQ) and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) are offered to all students in year 10 and year 12 as enrichment and extension options.
Why study for a HPQ or an EPQ?
Awarded by AQA, these project qualifications involve learning skills such as project management, decision making, referencing and reflection to prepare students for university and the workplace. A detailed production log report or artefact and presentation make up the assessment. Recent titles are as diverse as the role of AI in chess for primary school children, the politics of translation and public health provision for exercise in the elderly.

Curriculum
Year 10
Students are introduced to the HPQ project option in year 9 through presentations by older students. Problem solving and management are just two of the skills that students will develop through taking a project in year 10. The course lasts throughout year 10.
Sixth form
The EPQ option in the sixth form bridges the gap between school and university effectively and enables students to delve more deeply into areas of interest with a scholarly focus. Students can complete the course in a year or earlier if they have taken the HPQ.
'The EPQ has been an immensely enjoyable yet also challenging experience that has given me the independence to pursue a topic I am passionate about. It is a satisfying process that prepares you with a skillset encompassing research, organisational, and academic writing skills that will be really useful at university. I have loved researching my topic on whether translation is "an act of betrayal", and sharing this work with others.'
