He used three specific case studies - the rights of prisoners of Guantanomo Bay, homosexuality in Uganda and the 2019 prorogation of Parliament - to demonstrate the crucial importance that the law can make. It was an impassioned plea for our students to enter the law and to make a difference and he ended by quoting Ruth Ginsberg's inspiring advice for young women: “Fight for the things you care about but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”
The talk was at times provocative, and engendered some good questions, particularly from the year 13 politics class. These ranged from asking about the Shamima Begum case to Trump's use of social media to the ability of the judicial system to hold the executive to account in Britain.
