Divestment conference

Divestment conference presentation

As someone who usually attends sustainability talks which include a panel of scientists and innovators, it was particularly interesting to hear a different perspective on climate mitigation. Listening to Clara Barby, Dr Rhian Mari Thomas and Holly Turner was particularly inspiring, especially since they had come from such a diverse range of backgrounds thus, it quickly became evident that working in sustainability is truly for everyone, whether you are aspiring to be a scientist or a banker. Furthermore, what stuck with me the most was what Dr Rhian Thomas said about her collaboration with the head of one of the largest indigenous groups in Brazil. While neither of them were able to even speak the same language, it was still possible for them to communicate nonetheless and create solutions which benefit both parties involved. The two most significant things I have learnt from that particular interaction is that both communication and being open-minded are integral to create a meaningful impact, particularly in regards to climate mitigation.

From knowing next to nothing about sustainable investing I gained a wide range of knowledge from this conference which has opened my eyes to a whole new realm of finance which is growing rapidly. The conference gave me hope as hearing such knowledgeable experts speak so optimistically about the future impressed me and made me think more positively about such a negative issue. The panelists were all from different backgrounds and jobs, which was interesting to see how they had similarities and differences. The collaborative answers that were given helped form a well rounded view of the finance sector and its role in fulfilling sustainable solutions to climate change. As mentioned in the conference, it was inspiring to see so many women in such an important sector and seeing how they acted on their passion and values to make change.
