iGem
iGEM (international Genetic Engineering Machine) is an international synthetic biology research competition where students design and create genetically modified organisms, such as bacteria, to solve real life problems or improve upon existing solutions. The competition garners entries from the top universities in the world such as MIT, Harvard, and Imperial College London. Recent projects have included developing a diagnostic test for endometriosis, and focusing on breaking down nitrous oxide within an anaesthetic widely used across the NHS in a more sustainable, cost-effective manner than is currently available.
