Last Tuesday, the senior school history society (History Matters) visited Westminster Abbey for a tour with Dr Matthew Payne. We saw the tomb of Edward the Confessor, the royal saint of the abbey, and gained an insight into Dr Payne’s work on the muniments, which are held in the abbey. We were able to see one of only 24 surviving copies of the Magna Carta, a pivotal document in Britain’s political history and several documents forged by monks granting land to Westminster Abbey.
