On Thursday, our Law Society was treated to a fascinating talk on “An Introduction to Advocacy”, led by Tony Charles, the director of education at Gray’s Inn. We discussed the difference between criminal and civil proceedings, as well as the nature of a barrister's role. After a delicious lunch, we simulated court proceedings to practise our advocacy skills for a “plea in mitigation” (a petition from the defendant’s lawyers to decrease the sentence). In addition, each side discovered how to present their case based on what they wanted to achieve from the verdict. I think we all learnt lots about advocacy, even though many of us were complete beginners, and it was a great opportunity!
