Ines wins Robinson College Essay Prize 2022

We are incredibly proud of Ines who won the Robinson College, Cambridge Essay Prize for her response to the statement: "A good translation is like a pane of glass. It should never call attention to itself." (Norman R. Shapiro). The competition is open to all year 12 students in the UK and challenges entrants to ‘think outside the box’ with essay questions that are open to any academic discipline. Ines nuanced the statement with reference to classical works such as The Odyssey and Euripides’ Medea and was praised for her engagement with both the original texts and a range of translation choices. She was singled out for her ‘elegantly expressed’ argument and ‘persuasive positions on translation in relation to perspectivism, gender and the topic of slavery’. Ines will be invited to Robinson College, Cambridge for a prize-giving ceremony and celebratory lunch and we hope her success inspires her and other students at CLSG to keep exploring academic interests beyond the curriculum.
