Imperial War Museum trip

Students taking part in workshop at Imperial War Museum

Our year 10 historians made their way to the Imperial War Museum for a moving and instructive morning studying the Holocaust. This began with a workshop, focusing on some of the bigger questions about its importance in history as a whole, why it should be studied, issues of nomenclature and its reverberations for today.  As teachers we were struck by the sensitivity, maturity and thought-provoking nature of our students' responses.  We then moved onto the galleries, which were remodelled in 2021 and which chart through an extraordinary array of different types of evidence, this period as a whole.  The silence which descended was palpable as our students engaged with the myriad micro-stories, letters and photographs which have such a devastating impact.  The effect of these encounters will stay with them long after they have completed their IGCSE next year.
