Last Tuesday, twentieth century A level historians and History Matters members attended a perceptive, fascinating and informative lecture about the IRA and the Troubles in Northern Ireland by Professor Richard English of Queen's University Belfast and the George Mitchell Institute. He gave a detailed and insightful explanation of the IRA’s role in the Troubles, including the difference between loyalist and republican paramilitaries, and how decisions were made on the IRA Army Council.
