HerAI talk

Student asking a question at HerAI talk

As part of International Women’s Week and our HerAI programme, we had the inspiring opportunity to meet City alumna Katherine Yesilirmak (class of 2011), newly appointed secretary to the Manston Inquiry, for a thought‑provoking talk titled ‘Who’s Afraid of AI?’. She explained the inner workings of AI, helping us clearly understand the difference between large language models and Artificial Narrow Intelligence, before discussing what the future could look like as we move toward Artificial General Intelligence. Throughout the talk, we gained valuable insight into the ethical challenges ahead, from algorithmic bias to the social and environmental costs of AI. The session left us better informed, as well as empowered to think critically about how AI will shape our future studies, careers, and society.
