Since September, the cross country squads have been hard at work with training and competitions. There are three training sessions per week, including one on a Saturday morning on Hampstead Heath. This season began with the London Mini Marathon and this was closely followed by the first round of the English Schools Cross Country Cup; this saw all three squads - junior, inter and the newly formed seniors - through to the regional finals at St Albans. Regionals were a test on what was a cold but clear day. The juniors finished in 6th place, the inters, who were hit by Covid, in 5th place, while the the old age runners (as Mrs Helm likes to call them) made the top three finish and will now be running in Cornwall at the national finals.
Regionals were closely followed by the London Youth Games on Hampstead Heath in which CLSG ran as the City of London Borough. We fielded U11, U13, U15 and U17 squads. City of London came 12th overall out of 33 boroughs which is a fantastic result for a school competing against squads selected for their borough. The U15 squad must get a special mention, after just missing out at regionals. They picked themselves up and came a reputable 9th place overall for their year group with Lyra finishing with a medal in 3rd place.
National Finals take place on 4 December and the department would like to take this opportunity to wish the senior squad good luck.
