As readers of the Times last weekend might have spotted, this term we have welcomed back a super team of talented alumnae to help out with cover and odd bits of teaching, where teachers have needed to be remote due to coronavirus regulations.

Hear ye hear ye: Y12 public speaking competition
What's in a name? Is life easier for people who are conventionally beautiful? Would a social movement today be possible without teenagers? Is there a dark side to the Indian mica material mined for use in popular cosmetics? These were just some of the topics addressed by a group of talented year 12 speakers who put their oratory to the test on the 8 October in a public speaking competition organised by history teacher and head of politics, Mr Tomlison.

En garde – Olivia’s fencing success
Despite her youth, year 13 pupil Olivia O'Connell (pictured left) has already had a fantastic fencing career, ending last season ranked 12th in the GB Cadets (U17). For those outside the fencing world, the top 15 usually get to compete with the GB squad overseas. In other words: this is a pretty big deal.

Year 12 mathematicians had a great trip to the maths in action conference last week. Topics covered included Fermat's last theorem and transforming mobius strips, how MRI scanners function & how numbers determine which musical notes sound good together.
