Trips

Learning and inspiration happens both inside and outside the classroom. To this end, City girls enrich their knowledge through experience, on a series of co-curricular trips. Making use of our geographical location, many of these visits are to London’s museums, galleries, theatres and lectures. Others are opportunities to travel outside the City – often abroad – for day and residential trips.

London galleries

Art students visit major galleries including the Barbican Gallery, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Serpentine, Victoria Miro, Hayward and Hauser and Wirth. The DT department, meanwhile, visit the V&A and Design Museum on a regular basis.

BFI 1

London theatres and cinemas

With the Barbican complex on our doorstep and the West End not much further, students are often spoiled for choice with world-class plays and films to enrich their studies. GCSE and A-level drama students see around a dozen professional shows per year, Chinese students visit the BFI to learn about Chinese cinema, and English students hop across the river to catch the latest Shakespeare at the Globe.

London museums

History trips for year 7-9 each year are typically organised to the Museum of London, the Tower of London, The Docklands Museum of London, the National Army Museum, the Imperial War Museum and the Black Country Living Museum. The RPE department make use of the Jewish Museum, while the extensive Chinese collection at the British Museum helps Chinese language students situate their linguistic knowledge within its cultural context.

Pompeii

A joint Classics and geography trip to Italy allows year 7 students to explore the famous archaeological sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Oplontis, as well as Mount Vesuvius and the volcano at Solfatara. Those that take Classics into GCSE will then have the chance to travel to Athens and Delphi and experience the remnants of Greek civilisation.

Slapton Ley

Year 12 geography students head to this coastal spot in Devon for three days to investigate the surrounding plant-life as well as the impact of coastal defences on coastline erosion.

Washington and New York

History and politics run a popular biennial sixth form trip connected to some aspect of the A-Level syllabus. In past years, this has included Moscow and St. Petersburg; Washington and New York; Budapest; Vienna and Prague; and Istanbul.

Normandy

Year 8 French students take a five-day trip to Normandy, visiting sites including the Normandy landing beaches and the Bayeux tapestry. The history department also runs biennial trips for years 9 and 10 to visit the First World War battlefields of northern France and Belgium.

Geneva

Physics students have the option to travel to Geneva to visit the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, gaining an insight into the cutting edge of current physics research and exploring the picturesque lakeside city.

Ski 2

Ski trip

Our ski team regularly swap Primrose Hill and Muswell Hill for snowier climbs outside the UK to represent the school in competitions such as the British Schoolgirls Ski Championships. In addition, the annual ski trip is open to all students, visiting resorts in the Alps or as far afield as Geilo, Norway and Mont Sainte-Anne, Canada.

China Trip

Language exchanges

All languages studied at City offer international trips and exchanges, with sixth formers encouraged to undertake work experience or voluntary work in countries where the language(s) they study is spoken. In addition to our language exchanges in France, Spain, Germany, and China, we have also expanded our curriculum exchanges to include Australia, Argentina, Canada, and New Zealand, enabling our pupils to develop a wider understanding of the world.
