Our STEM offering reinforces our broader strategic aim of ‘ready to innovate’.

Pupils are encouraged to experiment and problem-solve, exercising entrepreneurial and collaborative skills beyond the confines of the curriculum through the below programmes and initiatives.

EDT Industrial Cadets

Step into the world of professional engineering. Through the Industrial Cadets Gold programme, our year 12 students partner with Arcadis and UCL engineers to tackle real infrastructure challenges. This year’s brief: designing a new bridge and canal in Wales. It’s a hands-on, ambitious and industry-led year-long programme culminating in Industrial Cadets and CREST awards.

iGEM competition

iGEM is the global stage for the next generation of synthetic biologists. Our two-time gold-winning students work like real research teams – designing, building, and testing biological systems that could change lives. With competitors including MIT, Harvard and Imperial, our students join a worldwide community pushing the boundaries of science and innovation.

SPARC

SPARC is one of the most exciting research programmes in UK schools. Over 80 students work weekly with PhD specialists to explore a question they care about over 8 months, across STEM fields, to produce a dissertation. Projects run across the City family of schools and culminate in the prestigious Gold CREST Award, a standout achievement for university applications.

Programme with Johns Hopkins University

Our partnership with Johns Hopkins University gives year 12 students direct access to world-leading biomedical engineering. The BMEI programme offers an immersive dive into medical innovation – students model systems, design experiments, and explore how engineering transforms healthcare.

City Symposium

City Symposium brings Sixth Formers together from CLSG and CLS for a year of big ideas. Weekly forums stretch students’ thinking through debate, research and presentation. It builds confidence, sharpens academic voice and opens the door to higher-level study.

Robotics

Our VEX robotics teams design, code and engineer robots that compete on local, regional and national stages. Students train in our dedicated robotics lab, working like real design teams as they refine their builds for increasingly complex challenges.

Kerridge Lecture series

The Kerridge Lectures connect students with leading researchers shaping the future of medicine and biology. Named after pioneering alumna Phyllis Margaret Tookey Kerridge, the series has welcomed world-class speakers such as Professor Nick Lane and Dr Guy Leschziner, allowing students to gain inspiration from the frontiers of science.

STEM enrichment

Beyond the curriculum lies our STEM enrichment programme: advanced topics, expert-led discussions, admissions test preparation and interview workshops that give students the edge for top universities. It’s where curiosity grows into confidence.

STEM Week

STEM week transforms the school with unforgettable experiences: pop-up planetariums, penguins roaming the halls, explosive chemistry shows, art–science installations, competitions and guest speakers. It’s a festival of discovery designed to spark imagination and surprise, led by our ambassadors. Find out what STEM week offers here.

STEM ambassadors

STEM ambassadors in years 12 and 13 are the driving force behind student leadership in science, maths and engineering. They run clubs, mentor younger students, support clinics and bring speakers into school -championing STEM and inspiring others to get involved.

Co-curricular science

From Olympiads to hands-on clubs, our co-curricular science offer is vast. Students can compete in national challenges, explore molecular synthesis, learn dissection skills, or join frequent workshops and trips. There is a scientific pathway for every passion.

STEM racing

Students take engineering to the fast lane with STEM RACING. Also known as the F1 in Schools Programme, teams design, test and race miniature Formula 1 cars using CAD and CNC manufacturing. Led by sixth formers and open across year groups, it combines creativity, physics and teamwork in a fast-paced, competitive environment whilst teams secure sponsorship, this year from ACCU and present their work competitively.

Co-curricular maths

Maths at City goes far beyond lessons. Students compete in the prestigious Hans Woyda competition, take on Olympiad challenges, and join problem-solving clubs that stretch and excite. It’s a place for mathematicians to thrive.

Medic preparation

MedSoc offers aspiring medics a complete preparation pathway – from admissions tests and MMI practice to discussion groups and medical ethics debates. Open to all year groups, it builds the skills, insight and experience students need to pursue careers in medicine.
