Italian
Through an original, creative and inspiring course, supported by native Italian speakers, our students learn about Italy's uniquely rich language and culture.
Italian at City
Italian at City allows you to study not only important figures of the past but also contemporary current affairs and cultural events.
Why study Italian at City?
The mission of the Italian department is to introduce the Italian language to sixth formers who are adventurous and committed to the study of languages. Students learn quickly how the language mirrors a number of other languages, making it easy to understand and apply. They are often surprised by just how quickly the learning of this language can take place so effectively. Many girls are inspired to pursue Italian at university as a result of this initial exposure.
Ultimately, we aim to equip pupils with the skills needed to become effective language learners at any stage of their lives. Students who opt for these courses often have a desire to pursue further languages when they leave school or who already have an appreciation of Italian culture through their own studies of history or history of art.

Curriculum
Sixth form
Italian is available to all year 12 students as a GCSE course which is taken alongside the first year of A level. No previous knowledge of Italian is required for the GCSE. In order to help the girls with their oral preparation, they will have one lesson every week with an Italian assistant. The course is an intensive one, however the girls seem to enjoy moving along quickly as most students tend to have some familiarity with French, Spanish or Latin, all of which are of great help linguistically.

"Italian is a great course to take because you learn so much in such a short space of time, and there is absolutely no pressure."
‘Here, what counts are ideas. And in the heat of adolescence, students can develop what they think and believe is important, often giving them confidence that will last a lifetime.’ Read @clsghead ‘s article in today’s @telegraph via the link in our bio.
