Students spend the afternoon with Winchester College’s ‘Makyth Ventures Group’, practising innovation and entrepreneurship. The girls come together from a range of year groups in ten teams of five to compete as new architecture companies in a world of spaghetti and marshmallow. With each building block (ranging from linguine to penne, gummy worms to chopsticks and including as many different sizes of marshmallow as you could possibly imagine) coming at a competitive and fluctuating price, the teams have to budget carefully to create their structures, negotiate with the bank and each other and pay attention to sudden flash sales! Teams must pitch for the rights to exclusive distribution of the giant marshmallows, write a written proposal to the bank for a loan, invest in research and development and insure themselves against collapse (or the ‘killer’ blue gummy worms). As well as being fun and exciting (and only occasionally messy!) the afternoon provides the students with a fabulous insight into the worlds of entrepreneurialism and business, and, crucially, spaghetti construction.
