The Preparatory Department is a happy, friendly and lively learning environment where girls are encouraged to develop a love of learning, knowledge and discovery. Girls are motivated and encouraged to become independent and organised learners through our successful and varied education programme and pastoral support and activities.
Subjects are taught by Prep staff in the Prep wing of the main school and also by specialist Senior school members of staff in the main school building. The resources of the main school such as the PE facilities, including our indoor swimming pool, lecture theatre and halls, drama, music, ICT, Design and Technology and art rooms are also used for lessons.
Outside the classroom, girls are able to learn a full range of musical instruments and participate in the Prep choirs and orchestra. Girls participate in gym and dance displays and competitions as well as playing netball, tennis, rounders and athletics. Healthy completion and charitable activities are encouraged through the House system and in matches and tournaments against other London schools. A wide range of clubs are available at lunchtimes and sporting activities and additional sporting squads take place after school. The girls participate in musical, poetry, art and drama performances and exhibitions throughout the year.
We make extensive use of our local environment and London's cultural resources thanks to our comprehensive programme of trips and visits. These include visits to museums and galleries, particularly the Museum of London and the Barbican Library and Arts Centre, as well as theatres and visits to important landmarks such as the Tower of London. There are regular visits to the Prep Department from touring theatre groups and guest speakers. The girls enjoy learning in different environments and enjoy the added dimension of regular fieldtrips to extend and enhance the curriculum. From Year Four onwards the girls participate in residential visits. These include visits to extend environmental, science, history and arts education as well as important team building and social skills. Centres visited are currently located in Somerset, Wales and France.
There is regular communication with parents both informally and through regular parent evenings and written reports. Prep parents are invited to many events throughout the school year and are welcomed in Prep at the beginning and end of the school day.
