The DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD at City
This programme is offered to all girls in Year 10-13, but the adventure begins at the end of Year 9 with enrolment for the Bronze level. Parents and their daughters are invited to a Presentation evening to meet staff and the Provider, AtoZ Expeditions. The girls enthusiastically enrol for the Award and numbers have increased significantly in recent years. Currently 78 girls in Y10 haveenrolled for Bronze and 76 girls in Year 11 are completing this level. The girls are encouraged to participate in this scheme as so many of their extra-curricular activities in Sport, Music and Drama can count towards completing the different sections of the Award. There are four sections in the Award, Service, Skill, Physical and Expedition, with different time scales for each section at each level.
The expedition with overnight camping takes place in the New Forest at Bronze level. For Silver, The White Peak in the Peak District, the Long Mynd in Shropshire, and the Surrey Downs are all popular venues. And for Gold we use the Brecon Beacons in Wales and this year the Cairngorms in Scotland is under consideration. The girls must attend a training day in March, a Practice expedition on a weekend in April, and a Qualifying expedition in the Summer term. Together with a final presentation this completes the fourth section of the Award.
As soon as girls complete all sections they are awarded a certificate and a badge in a school ceremony. They can then enrol for the next level. As they progress through each level the girls will experience new and exciting challenges in their sections and enjoy very different venues in the expeditions.
